introduced stomach pump,
etc., etc. I seldom in such cases called
the Superintendent. The constables that accompanied those patients to the Hospital, will corroborate this my statement. The records of the prescriptions kept at the Govenment Civil Hospital, will
show the large number of patients that have been treated by me. have every reason for saying, that Dr. Wharry had full confidence

objection, and were willing to continue to be examined by me.
had to be very strict at the examinations, because when I was ap-
pointed in 1883 by Lord Derby to be Resident Surgeon of the Lock Hospital, I was informed by two high Government Officials, that venereal diseases were spreading alarmingly in the Colony and that I should try my best to check them. As by far the largest number
of the registered women were Chinese, they naturally constituted the greatest percentage of those detained in Hospital, and were principally affected by the increased strictness of my examinations
and treatment which they disliked. But while I was very strict at
the examinations, I did not lose sight of the patients' conforts
and the following improvements were made in the Hospital at ny sag-

A stove was placed in the waiting room to warm it in
